
Rašica is a smaller clustered settlement in Municipality Ljubljana, it is located on sunny slope of the same name hill. On the hill is the peek of Stane Kosec on the altitude of 641 meters, where they in year 1957 erected a lookout tower. Rašica is the first Slovenian village, which was in year 1941 occupied by Germans and later burned down; locals were deported to Bosnia and Croatia. Arson happened as a revenge for the ambush of a German car. Village Rašica was rebuilt at the end of the Second World War.
The core of the settlement was built on the both sides of the road in Srednje Gameljne. Steep limestone ridge Reber rises above the village and contains Karst caves. Below the ridge is a known cliff named Pod Šitom, slightly higher is Zidanica, which was already populated in prehistory. The earth in the surroundings is loamy, under the village is a grassy meadow, where headwaters of stream Črnušnica is.
THE NAME OF THE VILLAGE
Rašica was for the first time mentioned in written sources in year 1260 as Wrenschitz, which originally in Slovenian language means Vranščica. The name comes from personal name Vran or adjective vranski. It refers to early inhabitants of this area. This name is not related with village Rašica near Velike Lašče. In the past the village was in German known as Uranshitz.
Rašica
Rašica is 647 meters high outlier above the village holding the same name and lies on the north part of the Ljubljana field. Ascent Rašica is combined from three peaks, along the most known Vrh Staneta Kosca, are on western slope Mali vrh and Veliki vrh. At the peak is 17 meters high lookout tower. [_Read more_]
Church of St. Cross
The Church of St. Cross in located in the settlement Rašica under the hill with the same name. The church was mentioned for the first time already in year 1526, and later in year 1581 in the inventory of Aquileia churches in Carniola. Since then only the shape of the ground plan remained.
