In the late Middle Ages two towers stood on the location, which was around year 1500 delineated by, today mostly still preserved, walls of Vipava anti-Turks camp. They were erected by the main springs of river Vipava. Earlier owners and builders were most likely Aquileia patriarchs, who were mentioned in the sources. The courts were probably built in 13th century. Sometime in the middle of 14th century the possession of the courts was given over to Habsburgs, approximately at the same time as the upper castle. According to the first sources, from year 1401, the that time duke Viljem Austrian bestowed the court in feud to Vilijem Baumkircher. With that the court with its entitled lands got its name – Baumkircherjev turn.

However later owner of the so called Lower castle became Andrej Baumkircher, famous general and friend of Erazem of Predjama. Later owners were counts Thurn, after Edlings. From latter the ownership was taken over by the countess Lavrencija Lanthieri in year 1565. Century later, the kinship Lanthieri rebuild and equipped the castle with ruristical portal that bears the year 1653. The castle was secured with walls due to the possibility of Turk and Venetian invasions. Probably it was because of this that the castle was named Tabor.
