Vipava is a settlement and center of eponymous municipality, which is located in the upper part of the Vipava valley. It is located next to numerous springs of river Vipava, which is the only river in entire Europe with a delta spring. Due to numerous springs, the inhabitants of the city built 25 bridges, the oldest is located behind Lanthieri mansion. Because of numerous bridges, the place is called Slovenian Venice. Locals and inhabitants of surrounding villages still refer to Vipava as the market. The first reference of the city’s name is from a document dating to the year 1367, when the inhabitants got the right to their own fair.

Vipava, with its surroundings, is an important agricultural center of Slovenia. In particular, due to wine production that exists from year 1894. Tourism and craft are also very important.

Both in the valley and in the city of Vipava, strong influence of Mediterranean climate can be felt, which allows breeding and growth of persimmons, figs, vines and even olives. Mild climate is occasionally interrupted by bora, which blows from Nanos and Trnovo forest.

SIGHTS OF VIPAVA

Building stock of Vipava is mainly from 18th and 19th century. Wealthy, as well as less wealthy, Vipava inhabitants wanted to make their place be embellished, so they decorated buildings with the entrances portals, informally said “kolone (columns)” or “portoni”. They can be seen everywhere, also in the narrow streets. In front of Lanthieri mansion are visible Baroque boys – putti, that used to decorate the castle park. Religious heritage is recognized in the parish church St. Stephen, which is adorned with the famous frescoes of Franc Jelovšek and Janez Wolf. Among special attractions of Vipava also belong the more than 4500 years old sarcophagi, two of the six in Europe, which lie on the Vipava cemetery from 1845, when they were brought here from Egypt by Anton Lavrin.

Castle Tabor (Baumkircherjev turn)
In the late Middle Ages two towers stood on the location, which was around year 1500 delineated by, today mostly still preserved, walls of Vipava anti-Turks camp. They were erected by the main springs of river Vipava. Earlier owners and builders were most likely Aquileia patriarchs. [_Read more_]

Lanthieri mansion
The noble family Lanthieri, originally from the vicinity of Brescia, moved to Gorizia in the 2nd half of the 15th century. Vipava mansion, which Valvasor called Novi grad (New castle), was built in year 1659 by Anton V. Lanthieri: as evidence serves carved keystone in portal with that year. [_Read more_]

Old castle
To Vipava inhabitants and to all other visitors Stari grad (Old castle) introduces a pleasant excursion point, due to a beautiful view over the whole upper Vipava valley. NLS monument
Vipava stands NLS monument, made according to the plans of Jože Plečnik. Monument was uncovered in year 1952. Cubic concrete pedestal stands on a landing from granitic cubes. On the pedestal is positioned the base with the column, where are installed cuboids with inscriptions. [_Read more_]

River Vipava
River Vipava springs from beneath the western slope of Nanos. Vipava is a unique river, which has numerous springs and their number depends on rainfall in its Karst hinterland. Not all dry up in the drought and are strong enough, that river Vipava stays a real river right from the spring. [_Read more_]

Church of St. Stefan
Church of St. Stefan lies between the coastal-like houses, which are surrounding it. On the southern side is surrounded by lime trees. Church of St. Stefan celebrates its “shagra”, as the celebration of the church patron is called, on 26th of December on the day of martyr Stefan. [_Read more_]

Vipava park After the completion of Novi grad (New castle) in year 1702, count Lanthieri started to arrange a catle park. Baroque park lies near Lathieri mansion, which stand at the spring of river Vipava, on southern edge of the old part of the city in Vipava valley. [_Read more_]
