Bled vanilla cream or cream cake is a symbol of Bled cuisine. At the same time it is much expanded dessert in Slovenia. Cream cake is being prepared in Bled since year 1953, when confectioner Ištvan Lukačević started to make them. He experimented with different recipes, final recipe contains the ratio between vanilla and cream 1:2, cream cake is of size 7×7. He used flour from Duchy, because Slovenian flour was not appropriate due to large air moisture. Originally the cream cake came from Domžale, where they started to make it in year 1938. The recipe was made by Janez Lenček senior. But in Bled they have more experience with making the cake. As a fact we can write, that in last 60 years they made more than 12 million cakes.
It is made from golden baked pastry, vanilla cream and whipped sweat cream. On the top it is sprinkled with icing sugar. The dough is made out of butter, not margarine. Vanilla cream must be just of right thickness, so it will not spread on the plate during slicing, at the same time it has to have a perfect taste. Sweat cream and vanilla cream must be it the right ratio.
