The noble family Lanthieri, originally from the vicinity of Brescia, moved to Gorizia in the 2nd half of the 15th century. Vipava mansion, which Valvasor called Novi grad (New castle), was built in year 1659 by Anton V. Lanthieri: as evidence serves carved keystone in portal with that year. The portal leads from the palace to a bridge behind. The reason for building was probably the announced arrival of the emperor Leopold I. in the next year. The emperor stopped here and spent the night on 17th September 1660 while on the road from Ljubljana to Gorizia. In the privileges, also granted to Lanthieri to get the count status in year 1642, was written, that every ruler who comes into the city and stops at the market, has the right to stay in palaces and castles of this family. According to the documents, stored in the archives of the family, it is clear that Viennese court usually pre-sent special commissioners, who took care that in Vipava in Branik additional stables and flats for numerous escort of the ruler were built. In Vipava, especially for this occasion, stables for 240 horses of military status were built.

In spirit of Baroquization of the mansion was rebuilt around 1762 in rural mansion. In front of the mansion was a park decorated with statues of putti. Along the park were built new economic buildings. Old ones behind the mansion were rebuilt in year 1767 and modified, so they formed a symmetrically arranged, three-wing closed building complex. The spatial axis, that runs from the park through the entrance of the mansion and across the bridge on the yard behind, continues there through newly built slightly stomped rustical portal to other, today demolished bridge over the spring of river Vipava to the city, where once stood the pavilion and wine temple.

After WWII the complex was nationalized and in the mansion Cultural center of Yugoslav army got its premises. After year 1991, the complex was taken over by the municipality of Vipava. The resident building of Lanthieri mansion was renovated at the end of year 2012. From the beginning of year 2013 there operates the Schools of Enology and Viticulture Nova Gorica.

Lanthieri and the emperors Leopold I. and Karl VI. (1728) in Vipava also hosted other celebrities such as Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni and painter Rosalba Carriera. Mansion in Vipava was an important administrative, cultural and social center of the upper Vipava valley.
