Otter – the queen of waters
Eurasian otter (latin. Lutra lutra) has entered into nature protection with big steps in the eighties of the past century. From industrially developed countries with high life level it almost disappeared or became very rare. As one of the most endangered European species it became the symbol of European convention of safety of animal and plant species – Berne convention. It is also ranked in addition of II and IV European habitat guidelines; that is why the special conservation measures must be provided. One of these measures are also special conservation areas, connected to European ecological network Natura 2000. We are standing in the middle of such area: Goričko with a sign SI3000221.

The Otter is predator from the family of martens, umbrella species of freshwater ecosystems and excellent indicator of their conservation. Its lovely image communicates: do not desecrate rivers and streams with sewages from households, agriculture and industry, preserve their natural river-beds with green riversides and respect water as a valuable natural good! With otter we will preserve all biodiversity of lakes, swamps, rivers and stream, from the spring to the mouth.
It is a mammal of brown color and completely adjusted to life in water. In average it grows around 90 centimeters in length, occasionally also over one meter. Its withers height is around 30 centimeters. Grown otter weights around 10 kilograms. Otter mostly lives in water, its main prey are fishe, also other smaller mammals, amphibians and plants, it is extremely hydrodynamically formed animal. The tail helps it while swimming, with which it pedals through water. Tail represents half of the animal’s length.
