Where the gulf of Trieste lies, as an integral part of Adriatic sea and the closest to the heart of Europe, there lies Slovenian coast and Portorož. Slovenian coast is bordering the two countries: across the sea and along the eastern edge of the border to Italy and to Croatia on the south. Portorož is an urban settlement on the northern shore of the bay of Piran in municipality Piran. The city developed into a leeward position below the steep flysch ridge. The harbour is protected from the north wind. Portorož is extremely touristic place, a popular place to relax, entertain and also work. In the 13th century, Portorož became locally known as a health resort and in 1897 the city was officially declared as health resort.

Different cultures and music, nature, gastronomic delights and variegated historical past are being interwoven here. That is what creates an environment in which you can forget about everyday worries and just relax. Relaxing wandering by the sea, refreshing jogging on the beach or swimming in the sea fills us with new energy. Portorož is also closely connected to the nearby Piran, a small medieval town, which became famous and rich with the production of salt that was one of the biggest in this part of the world. Today, most of them are abandoned and give shelter to many species of birds that nest or stop here on their way to the south. Right saltpans with their natural ingredients – salt, brine and mud – enabled the development of tourism in Portorož. Already in 19th century they discovered the healing properties of these compounds and Portorož first hotels and spa were established.

With its subtropical climate Portorož is one of the warmest parts of Slovenia. There are many sunny days with low rainfall, between 1000 and 1100 millimetres per year. There are typical mild winters, temperatures rarely drop below zero.

It is typical coastal place that does not have excessively high hills or large changes of altitude. All attractions lie near the sea where tourism is most developed. More as you move away from the seaside, there are less tourist attractions and only villages. The highest peak in Portorož is about 50 meters above sea level.

For coastal towns such as Portorož more common are cooking recipes consisting of seafood spices and ingredients. Dishes are containing fish, shellfish, crustaceans and other marine animals. Primorska people are known of preparing seafood in a special way, to taste better then if you prepare it yourself.
