Day of sovereignty
State holiday

On October 25th in Slovenia we celebrate Day of sovereignty, with which key event in process of independency of Slovenia is commemorated. The day last soldier of Yugoslav People’s Army left Slovenian territory after the independence war. It is state holiday, but not work free day.

Holiday was in Slovenia introduced on March 9th 2015 by the initiative of Association of war veterans for Slovenia and Veteran society Sever. Proposal for the holiday was submitted by member of Party of the modern center.

Main event otherwise happened in the night on October 26th 1991, when from port Koper last ship sailed with last soldiers, that is why occasionally the anniversary is set on October 26th. From international view boarded soldiers left Slovenian territory even before. As two ships were still anchored in the harbour, but since they sailed under foreign flag, they are considered as foreign territory.
